Well, not quite, but there is now a stubby pen-sized device
capable of holding up to 1 gigabyte of data (that’s over 700
floppy disks). The device is made by Pen Drive and weighs in
at 21 grams, about the heft of a plastic whistle. While the 1
gigabyte versions are a bit pricey, the 32 megabyte model or
64 megabyte model can be had for a reasonable price, and for
most people, 32 megabytes still represents more reports and
documentation than they will produce in a year or two, or
three.
Pen Drives need no external power. Connect them via their USB
cable and they are ready to go. Pen Drives are hot swappable,
plug & play devices that computers recognize as removable
drives without the need to install special software. They come
in a variety of models and have some amazingly flexible uses.
Pen Drives can be shared over your network. For security
purposes, you can use your Pen Drive as a key to lock valuable
information on your hard drive. Without the Pen Drive --your
key-- the data is not accessible. For music fanatics, there
are Pen Drive MP3 players.
The Pen Drive represents an easy to use backup device for
critical files; it not only keeps them safely off premises,
but in your pocket! Best of all, Pen Drives are sturdy,
shockproof devices. They resist vibration, humidity, and
magnetic fields, though it is recommended that you dry your
Pen Drive thoroughly before plugging it in, should you have
dropped it in a puddle.
It is no rash prediction to assume this trend is only
beginning. It may not be long before it is possible to fit all
of human knowledge on the head of a pin, and at a price none
of us think is a big deal after all.
