Eventually, everyone gets a new
computer. In the past, the joy of new equipment was always marred by
the pain of getting all your “stuff” from the old to the new
machine. Windows XP has begun to change that with the introduction
of the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
Files can be transferred over your
network, or in the absence of a network, using a null modem serial
cable available at most electronic stores. Once the machines are
connected, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and
then Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. From there, follow the
instructions of the Wizard to transfer settings for applications
such as taskbar options, email, and specific folders from Desktop
and Fonts to My Documents and My Pictures. By the time you are done,
from fonts to wallpaper, from colors to crucial financial data, your
new computer should feel more like home.
Even if a new computer is not in your immediate future, the Files &
Transfer Settings Wizard can be used to make a backup of your
settings in case Windows should ever need to be reinstalled.
You may need your Windows XP CD for
some of the steps, and programs themselves must be reinstalled on
the new computer, as they cannot migrate from one machine to
another. To get a more detailed look at the process, follow this

article on Microsoft’s website.
