Did you know Microsoft Word has some 20 toolbars beyond the Standard and Formatting bars commonly seen at the top of the window? Everything from Mail Merge to Tables and Borders can be activated by clicking on the View menu and selecting Toolbars.
But what if you happen to use the Word Art button from the Drawing Toolbar, the Text Wrapping button from the Picture Toolbar, and the Sort button from the Tables toolbar? Having these three extra toolbars on the screen at all times would eat up valuable space.
You can customize your toolbars by picking the exact icons you want, mixing and matching buttons to your heart’s content. Just click on Customize at the bottom of the toolbars list.
The Customize dialog box appears. You can use the Toolbars tab to set which toolbars appear each time Word is used.
The Commands tab allows you to click and drag individual icons from the Commands box to a toolbar of your choice. You can also drag icons off the toolbars and drop them in the commands list.
After all, you may want to remove a few buttons from the standard selections, just to simplify your life. Exactly how often do you use the Document Map control?
In this way, you can truly make Word’s toolbars more user friendly by matching the control icons to your everyday habits.
The examples given are in Word 2003; however, Word 2000 operates in a very similar fashion, and you should have no trouble making changes based on these suggestions.
